The nation’s 1,100 community colleges, where 20% of public school teachers started their higher education, remain an untapped resource in addressing the nation’s teacher shortage. If additional resources are set aside to strengthen teacher preparation programs at the community college level, America could cut its shortage of 2.4 million teachers by one-quarter or more. In addition, strengthened teacher education programs at these institutions also can help address the lack of diversity among the nation’s teaching force.
